Right To Exist

"Right to exist" must be one of my least favorite phrases. And you know know exactly what I mean. There's only one context in which it appears "Israel's right to exist", most often phrased as a question. The reason I hate this phrase is that it doesn't make any sense to me and everyone acts like they know what it means. I think its primary function is as a code word. If you question it, you are automatically out of the club. There's only one allowed answer: "Yes, I believe in Israel's right to exist" even if the person who says this has no idea what exactly they are affirming other than an allegiance to some kind of Jewish/Zionist identity.

There are so many problems with it. What is a right to exist? Who guarantees this right? Even if this right is recognized does it mean that the entity in question necessarily have to exist? And then, of course, in this particular context, there is the extremely loaded term "Israel". Israel in what borders, with what identity?

I just cannot accept this kind of mindless repetition of phrases.
