Track Obsessions

Post date Title Body
2011-10-18 15:22 Professor Genius - Assassins (Steve Moore 'Time Of the Assassins' Remix) - L.I.E.S. - 2011

Somewhere between early 80's Tangerine Dream and early 90's trance (not really much of a difference) with lush pads, machine gun Moog bass and yearning melody.

2010-12-19 03:00 The Banker - Boopsie Boo - 1987

Very rare digital dancehall track with vocals from Ini Kamoze. The synths remind me of italo a little bit but it's the vocals that put it over the top.

2010-10-15 15:52 Tensnake - Coma Cat (Radio Edit) (Permanent Vacation) - 2010

I am so surprised to hear a track that totally gets the early 90's vibe in 2010. I guess we'll be hearing more of those in the future. Just a totally joyful house track, maybe a little cheesy even. I prefer the radio edit because it gets down to business right away.

2010-09-13 22:00 Ait Meslayene - El Fen - 1976

Once again proving the thesis that everyone made a disco record in the mid-70's. This is an Algerian (Kabylie) singer and I am guessing it was recorded in France. The bassline on this is so thick and juicy.

2010-09-09 16:39 Hyboid - Vogon Poetry (Astro Chicken) - 2010

Spacey, melodic, fast paced electro with that Nintendo top-down shooter feel.

2010-09-03 15:52 Tempa T - Next Hype (No Hats No Hoods) - 2009

Just a good grime track done as I like: rough. None of that autotune or singers on choruses.

2010-08-23 09:24 Heavenly - Trophy Girlfriend - 1996

Tuneful indie with girl vocals. This is a bit heavier than their earlier material. Non-stop hooks.

2010-06-08 02:00 ABC - Poison Arrow - 1982

I don't know what took me so long to discover this song. It's strange to see such out and out disco in 1982. It's very similar to Roxie Music's Love Is The Drug from 7 years before. At the same time it sounds very contemporary, could have come out on DFA a few years ago.

2010-03-18 02:00 Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug - Siren - 1975

Very funky, prefiguring post-punk in some ways. The vocal style reminds me of the Knife. Saxophone is a bonus.

2009-12-14 03:00 Gang Of Four - Damaged Goods - 1978

I like the way the vocals are declaimed instead of sung. Scratchy guitar and driving bassline and beat. The only track of theirs I really like.

2009-11-05 03:00 Scientist - Space Invaders Re-Group - 1982

From the Scientist Encounters Pac-Man album, this is a dub of Linval Thompson's Call Me. The bassline is unstoppable and the dub is livened up by the inclusion of a small bit of the excellent vocals. The rhythm guitar comes in and out and the snare is reverbed to massive dimensions. Magnificent.

2009-10-27 02:00 Glam - More Than Ever (Crash) - 1985

Italo disco pop with some freestyle touches. You can already see some similarity to the Italian house sound that appeared later. Cool vocals from Clio and loads of echo.

2008-09-25 02:00 Run DMC - Peter Piper - 1985

Don't know how I avoided this all my life. A great slice of mid-80's pre-sample era hip-hop with the dj juggling two copies of Bob James - Take Me To The Mardi Gras. A fat drum machine provides the rest of the beat with a few other samples scratched in here and there. I've really grown to love the really bare-bones drum machine driven hip-hop like this recently (see also previous selection).

2008-03-11 02:00 Mantronix - We Control The Dice - 1986

The immortal Bassline, sharp 808 beats, furious rhymes and bells!

2008-02-25 03:00 The Tom Tom Club - Lorelei - 1981

Instrumental or vocal version, both are slightly otherwordly. It has a reggae feel to it while still retaining the trademark Talking Heads funk.

2007-12-04 03:00 Sally Shapiro - I'll Be By Your Side - 2006

As authentic a piece of mid-80's italo disco as you are likely to hear but made in 2006. You either get the appeal of this or I am not bothering to explain it to you.

2007-09-13 02:00 OC - Time's Up - 1994

The essence of mid-90's NY hip-hop. Such a heavy and dark beat thanks to a 70's jazz sample. OC puts some amazing lyrics over it with a flow that adds a whole new layer of rhythm and rhyme scheme that comes and goes.

2007-08-14 02:00 Ame - Fiori (Ostgut Tontrager) - 2007

The kind of music that Derrick May would be making if he was to make music today. Like early 90's trance slowed way down, long and slowly developing. It's those Detroit pads that push it over the edge and make it a masterpiece.

2007-07-03 02:00 Methusalem - Zombie - 1980

A perfect slice of cheesy European disco. The corny melodies are tempered by some nice synth work and live percussion. There's a great breakdown in the middle that could have come from a Salsoul record. There's some vocoders in this as a bonus.

2007-06-10 02:00 Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges - Clube Da Esquina No. 2 - 1972

Sitting on the porch in the summer at sunset relaxing after a day at work. That's the picture I get from this simple yet rich tune. Beautiful wordless crooning and strings twist around over the theme. It's way too short.

2007-05-13 02:00 Pet Shop Boys - Love Comes Quickly - 1986

Beautiful song, very lush, not overpowered by 80's sound design. Catchy melody obviously. There are so many things going on in this track, so many layers.

2007-04-25 02:00 Dennis Ferrer - I Can't Imagine - 2006

Heard on a Kerri Chandler mix. Just a nice deep house song with a catchy melody and smooth vocals that remind me of 90's r'n'b. Those lyrics really touch a nerve.

2007-04-09 02:00 Paul Johnson - Hear The Music (Peacefrog) - 1996

Yet more proof that disco sampling house is the best dance music possible. Relentlessly uplifting. Love the chipmunky vocals. There's quite a lot of detail in what appears to be a simple three bar loop - from little guitar lick edits to just the sheer amount of sounds happening: bass, strings, two guitar lines, vocal samples, keys. When you start getting into it it just becomes a swirling mass of sound.

2007-03-23 02:00 Dntel - (This Is) The Dream Of Evan And Chan (Superpitcher Kompakt Remix) (Plug Research) - 2002

First heard it while watching Feiern over the weekend. I was just floored by it. Superpitcher is well known for making emotional music (especially his remix) but when paired with the video the effect was just devastating. It's a simple track really, all the noises and IDM beats of the original are stripped away and a four-to-the-floor with the repeating chords is put behind the vocal. That helps the vocal, even though it almost slides into maudlin territory. Anyway, great romantic, cuddly stuff.

2007-02-22 03:00 T.A.T.U. - How Soon Is Now - 2003

Cover of a Smiths song. This was kind of an introduction to both T.A.T.U. and The Smiths for me (hey, only 5 and 25 years too late). I think I slightly prefer the cover to the original. Morrissey himself called it "magnificent". Something so great about the video too.

2007-02-08 03:00 PIL - Albatros - 1979

I've forgotten about this until recently I heard it again in True Vine. It's been haunting me for the last month. Can meets dub reggae would be the most facile description and it sums it up pretty well. Lidden punches above his weight here. His off-key, grating vocals and monotone delivery really work with the screeching guitars and chugging rhythm section.

2007-02-04 03:00 Syncom Data - Horse (Obi's Heavyweight Dub) (SD) - 2005

Dub techno in the style of Rhythm & Sound. Nice patois chatter. Pretty busy for this kind of track. That key change in the middle adds so much to the track, makes me wonder why it's not used more often.

2007-02-01 03:00 Samsimar - Indang Pariaman

Something from the Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra Vol.1 CD. I love the dirty sound like it comes from a beat up tape or something. I love it all: the simple bassline, twirling vocal melody (sung by children), some weedy synths and a wind instrument that follows the vocal.

2007-01-27 03:00 Luomo - Shelter (Force Tracks) (2003)

Late to the party as usual I only just heard the second Luomo album "The Present Lover". "Shelter" grabbed me immediately. It's probably the most straightforwardly house-y track on the album. Unlike most of the other tracks the vocal is a simple refrain repeated over and over (but so sweet). The bassline is bubbly and insistent. Good, shoplifting stuff with all the mastery you expect from Vladislav Delay.

2007-01-20 03:00 Ernesto - Blame It On Your Melody (Unai Remikz) (Exceptional) - 2005

Reminiscent of Round Two - New Day. This a deep dubby house track. It's rather minimal, letting the great male vocals carry the melody. Interesting and memorable lyrics (for a house track anyway).
